Guides Coming to an event

Coming solo

Going to a singles event alone: how to make it easy

Coming alone? Plenty of people do. Arriving on your own is normal at a singles event, and a good event is built around exactly that.

Why going alone is easier than it sounds

  • Nobody is waiting on you. You can talk to whoever you like, for as long as you like.
  • You’re more approachable. People find it easier to say hello to one person than to a group.
  • Everyone is in the same boat. A room of people who also came alone is a friendly room.

Before you go

  • Aim to arrive just after doors open, when everyone is new and looking for someone to talk to
  • Have one easy opener ready: “Is this your first one too?” works every time
  • Give it until your second game before you decide how it’s going

At our events

Our afternoons are built for solo guests. A host meets you at check-in and introduces you to people in your group. Every game is mixed doubles with a new partner, so you’re meeting people from the first rally, and there are question cards courtside if you need a conversation starter.

See the whole afternoon from a solo guest’s point of view on our coming solo page, and read how to handle nerves.
