Date ideas

First date ideas in Surrey: 12 dates that beat a drink

A first date goes better when there’s something to do. Here are ideas around Surrey for every kind of weather and every kind of nerves.

Outdoors

  • WalkBox Hill, near Dorking. A climb, a view across the Weald, and a café at the top to reward yourselves.
  • WalkNewlands Corner, near Guildford. One of the best sunset spots in the Surrey Hills, with an easy stroll from the car park.
  • WalkThe River Wey towpath from Guildford. Flat, pretty, and with a few good pubs along the way.
  • GardensRHS Garden Wisley. Big enough to wander for hours, with the glasshouse for when it rains.
  • GardensPainshill, Cobham. An eighteenth-century landscape garden with follies and a lake, plus a crystal grotto that opens on selected days.
  • MorningA parkrun and a coffee. Free, timed 5k runs every Saturday morning in parks across Surrey. Walking it is allowed.

Indoors and any weather

  • ActiveA game of padel. Book a court, find another couple or join a social session. You’re on the same team from the first point.
  • ActiveA climbing wall. Bouldering means lots of chatting between climbs, and someone to cheer you on.
  • PlayfulCrazy golf or bowling. Low stakes, mildly competitive, and impossible to take too seriously.
  • TastingDenbies Wine Estate, Dorking. English wine from the vines on the hill, with tastings and vineyard tours (check what’s running).
  • LearnA cooking or pottery class. A shared project and something to take home.
  • EveningA pub quiz. Teamwork, a few laughs, and you learn how they handle not knowing the answer.

Opening times, prices and booking change often, so check before you go.

Making it a good one

  • Suggest a plan, with a time and place. “Fancy a walk up Box Hill on Sunday morning?” is easier to say yes to than “we should hang out”.
  • Keep the first one short. An hour or two leaves you both wanting more.
  • Stay safe. Meet somewhere public, tell a friend where you’re going, and get yourself there and back.
