Guides Dating and meeting people

After the event

What to say after a match: first messages that work

You’ve matched. That means you both said yes, so the hard part is done. Here’s how to turn it into a date.

The formula

  1. Say who you are. Everyone met a lot of people that afternoon.
  2. Mention a moment. A rally you shared, something you laughed about, a question card you both answered.
  3. Suggest something. A game, a coffee, a walk. Give a rough day.

Examples

Hey, it’s Sam from the padel on Saturday. Still thinking about that rally where we both went for the same ball. Fancy a coffee next week?

Hi! Jess here, we were partners in game four. I owe you another game, or at least a drink. Free on Thursday?

Hey, it’s Priya. Great to match as friends. A few of us are booking a court next weekend if you fancy a game?

Short beats clever. A quick hello within a day or two is better than a perfect message next week.

Friend matches

A friend match means you both picked Date or Friend, and at least one of you picked Friend. If one of you picked Date and the other Friend, it’s a friend match, and nobody finds out who hoped for more. Take it at face value: a new padel partner or a new mate is a great result. Suggest a game.

If they go quiet

  • Give it a few days. People get busy.
  • One friendly nudge is fine: “No worries if you’re busy, the offer stands.”
  • After that, let it go gracefully. There’s always the next event.
